Fresh and Innovative Gameplay

Picto is a game about using your phone's camera to interact with the real world. The game will ask you questions, in the form of levels, and it's up to you to find the answer somewhere in your surroundings.

How will you get over that gap? How will you make it past that guard dog? How will you escape through that solid wall? You are allowed to use your full creativity, to find an answer somewhere in the infinite sandbox of life.

The game aims to explore the full consequence of mixing reality with a video game, and does not shy away from all of the amazing things that can happen, but rather embraces them. You can walk around on your shadow or your reflection in the mirror. You can create the solution to a level with objects in your room, find it out in nature, draw it with pen and paper or on a computer screen.

The best way to get a feel for the game is of course to try the Demo.

Custom Made Game Engine

The game's engine is written from scratch in C++ and uses a new mixed reality technique not seen in any previous game. The idea behind the tech is to create as much interesting gameplay as possible, rather than making the most immersive AR experience, which might be what gives it the edge over traditional AR games.

´´A hot topic of discussion for indie developers is whether you should use a pre-built game engine, like Unity or Unreal, or make your own. I stand pretty firmly on the side that using a pre-built engine limits your imagination somewhat. You will be thinking about what you can do with rigidbodies, character controllers, scripts, effects and so on, instead of just thinking about pure code and all of the things that a computer actually is capable of doing.

Picto is an example of a game which I think would be harder to make in a pre-built engine, especially if you want to make it run well, since the game consists of a combination of a bunch of different custom-made systems that don't already exist in engines.``

Kickstarer in November!

We're planning on launching a kickstarter in November to be able to complete the game, kickstarter.picto-game.com.

We have lot's more stuff planned for the full game than what is shown in the demo. Lot's of new mechanics (such as the water simulation in the video above), new areas, and many new levels, but also a level editor!

The editor is of course going to let you design your own levels like the ones in the game, and share them with anyone, but we also have plans for a new kind of level. The new level type will have you place out Tim, stars, enemies, and then record a video. The player of the level will then get to play the video your recorded, and try to collect the star. This will basically turn Picto into a real life game engine, which lets you design levels on pen and paper, record them, and send them to your friends or anyone who would like to play!

The Picto editor will basically be a real life version of Super Mario Maker.
